Floods and droughts: a multivariate perspective

چکیده
Abstract. Multivariate or compound hydrological-extreme events such as successive floods, large-scale droughts, consecutive drought-to-flood challenge water management and can be particularly impactful. Still, the multivariate nature of floods droughts is often ignored by studying individual characteristics only, which lead to under- overestimation risk. Studying extremes challenging because variable dependencies they are even less abundant in observational records than univariate extremes. In this review, I discuss different types hydrological their dependencies, including regional affecting multiple locations, spatially connected flood events; occurring close temporal succession, droughts; characterized characteristics, with jointly high peak discharge volume; transitions between extremes, transitions. present strategies describe model assess hazard potential, descriptors distributions return periods, stochastic large-ensemble simulation approaches. The discussed enable a perspective on allows us derive risk estimates for extreme described more one variable.

Space technology has made substantial contribution in all the three phases such as preparedness, prevention and relief phases of drought and flood disaster management. The Earth Observation satellites which include both geostationary and polar orbiting satellites provide comprehensive, synoptic and multi temporal coverage of large areas in real time and at frequent intervals and ‘thus’ have bec...
متن کاملEffects of Severe Floods and Droughts on Wildlife of the Pantanal Wetland (Brazil)—A Review
Flooding throughout the Pantanal is seasonal. The complex vegetative cover and high seasonal productivity support a diverse and abundant fauna. A gradient in flood level supports a range of major habitats in a complex mosaic with annual seasonality. The rivers and streams are lined with gallery forests, and other arboreal habitats exist in the more elevated areas. The remainder is either grassl...
متن کاملPrecipitation in a Changing Climate– More Floods and Droughts in the Future
Evidence is building that human-induced climate change— or global warming—has a direct influence on changes in precipitation and the hydrological cycle. While precipitation amount is most commonly considered, even bigger changes occur in its intensity, frequency and type (rain vs. snow). A warmer climate increases risks of both drought and flood, but at different times and/or places. These aspe...
متن کاملDroughts and Floods in the La Plata Basin in Soil Moisture Data and GRACE
The mapping and forecasting of droughts and floods is an important potential field of application of global soil moisture and water storage products from satellites and models. Especially when extremes in near-surface soil moisture propagate into extremes in total water storage, agricultural production and water supply can be severely impacted. This study relates soil moisture from the WaterGAP...

[1] An accurate prediction of extreme rainfall events can significantly aid in policy making and also in designing an effective risk management system. Frequent occurrences of droughts and floods in the past have severely affected the Indian economy, which depends primarily on agriculture. Data mining is a powerful new technology which helps in extracting hidden predictive information (future t...
